Pope Leo XIV Highlights AI, Faith, and the Liturgy in Latest Vaticano Updates

In this week’s Vaticano Updates, Pope Leo XIV addressed some of the most pressing spiritual and cultural questions facing the Church today, including artificial intelligence, perseverance in the faith among young Catholics, the importance of the sacred liturgy, and the Vatican’s growing engagement with emerging technologies.

Pope Leo XIV’s First Encyclical to Address Artificial Intelligence

The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical will be published on May 25. The Holy Father is expected to personally present the document during an event in the Vatican Synod Hall.

The encyclical, titled Magnifica Humanitas, focuses on the protection of human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence. According to the Vatican, the document will provide moral guidance regarding the digital revolution and rapidly developing technologies such as AI.

The announcement signals the Pope’s intention to place questions of ethics, humanity, and technological progress at the center of his pontificate.

The Pope Encourages Young Catholics to Persevere

Speaking to young people preparing for Confirmation, Pope Leo XIV expressed concern that many Catholics no longer attend church after receiving the sacrament.

The Holy Father encouraged candidates to reflect especially on the gift of perseverance, one of the gifts associated with the Holy Spirit. In an impromptu message to young people from the Archdiocese of Genoa, the Pope described Confirmation as a source of spiritual strength and enthusiasm.

He said the fullness of the Holy Spirit gives believers “this enthusiasm, this strength, this ability to follow Jesus Christ, to always say yes to the Lord.”

Pope Leo also invited young Catholics to remain active in parish life and to see themselves as part of the worldwide Christian community.

The Sacred Liturgy at the Heart of the Church

During a general audience in Saint Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV began a new catechetical series focused on Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy.

The Pope emphasized that the liturgy occupies a central place in the life of the Church because it touches “the very heart of the mystery of Christ.”

Reflecting on the intentions of the Council Fathers during Vatican II, Pope Leo explained that the reform of the liturgy was never meant to be merely external. Rather, it was intended to foster a deeper spiritual renewal among the faithful.

He also reiterated that the liturgy is not an isolated activity, but “the summit towards which the activity of the Church is directed.”

Vatican Establishes New Artificial Intelligence Commission

The Vatican also announced the creation of a new commission on artificial intelligence.

The commission will coordinate the Holy See’s response to the rapid expansion of AI technology and examine its implications for human dignity, integral human development, and the Church’s own use of artificial intelligence.

According to the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV made the decision in response to the growing influence of AI in recent decades and the potential consequences these technologies may have on humanity as a whole.

The initiative reflects the Vatican’s increasing attention to ethical questions surrounding technological advancement and its impact on the human person.

Pope Leo XIV to Visit France

The Vatican confirmed that Pope Leo XIV will undertake an apostolic journey to France from September 25 to 28.

During the visit, the Pope is expected to stop at UNESCO headquarters. The trip will become his fifth international apostolic journey.

The Holy Father has already traveled to Turkey and Lebanon in 2025, as well as Monte Carlo and Africa in 2026. He is also scheduled to visit Spain from June 6 to 12.

As Pope Leo XIV continues the early years of his pontificate, his message remains focused on the relationship between faith, culture, human dignity, and the spiritual mission of the Church in the modern world.
