In 2016, a devastating earthquake destroyed the Crocifisso di Sant’Eutizio, a masterpiece painted by Nicholas of Ulysses of Siena in 1472, and reduced it to 30 fragments. However, the Vatican Museums took on the challenge of restoring this ancient artwork, and after five years of meticulous work, it is finally ready to be displayed in exhibition. Join EWTN Vatican Bureau Chief, Andreas Thonhauser, as he interviews Dr. Barbara Jatta, Director of the Vatican Museums, and Dr. Francesca Persegati, Director of Paintings and Wood Materials Restoration Laboratory, about the restoration process of the Crocifisso di Sant’Eutizio. Discover what makes this artwork so special and why the Vatican Museums chose to take on this project. This exhibition coincides with the 100-year anniversary of the Vatican Museums’ Restoration Department, which has restored hundreds of paintings since its foundation in 1923. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to witness the heart and hands of professionals bringing this masterpiece back to life.
