Vatican Appointments. Fernandez as Member of Another Dicastery, the Number 2 of the Academy of Theology

Two minor appointments, but which may change some perspectives. Fernandez also ends up at the Dicastery for Legislative Texts. A new secretary for the Pontifical Academy of Theology

Cardinal Victor Fernandez, who serves as the prefect of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith, has been appointed by Pope Francis to become a member of seven dicasteries within the Curia. Additionally, Cardinal Lazzaro You Heung-sik, the prefect of the Dicastery for the Clergy, has also been named a member of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts. This appointment is significant as it plays a pivotal role in ensuring the alignment of legal texts with canon law.

These appointments may not come as a surprise, given the intrinsic connection between the discipline of doctrine and the formulation of legislative texts. It is evident that legislative texts require the guidance of priests. However, it is noteworthy that the composition of dicastery members is undergoing some changes as certain cardinals conclude their five-year terms.

In addition to these new members of the Dicastery for Legislative Texts, Pope Francis has appointed the new Prelate Secretary of the Pontifical Academy of Theology, namely Dominican Father Giuseppe Marco Salviati. This academy is dedicated to theologians’ training and is entrusted with the mission of fostering dialogue between faith and reason. Furthermore, it aims to deepen Christian doctrine in line with the Holy Father’s guidance. The academy’s scholars are responsible for elucidating the wisdom of Revelation and the content of faith.
