Pope Appoints New Bishop of Setúbal

Cardinal-designate Monsignor Américo Manuel Alves Aguiar, currently serving as an auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, has been appointed by the Pope as the new Bishop of Setúbal, Portugal.

Born in 1973, with expertise in communication, he was ordained a priest on July 8, 2001, and initially served in the Diocese of Porto.

After working as a parish priest, Vicar General, President of the Board of Directors of Rádio Renascença, and Director of the National Secretariat for Social Communication, he was elected by Pope Francis on March 1, 2019, as the titular Bishop of Dagno and appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Patriarchate of Lisbon.

He was consecrated on March 31 of the same year by Cardinal Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente, the Patriarch of Lisbon. As an auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, he played a significant role in organizing the World Youth Day held in the Portuguese capital last August.

On September 30, the Pope will elevate him to the rank of Cardinal.
