Pope Francis: “Cardinal Pell, faithful servant to the Lord even in the hour of trial”

I remember with a grateful heart his consistent and committed witness, his dedication to the Gospel and the Church, and particularly his diligent cooperation with the Holy See in its recent economic reform, of which he laid the foundations with determination and wisdom.” These are the words of the Pope in his telegram of condolence on the death yesterday, Jan. 10, 2023, of Card. George Pell, Archbishop Emeritus of Sydney and Prefect Emeritus of the Secretariat for the Economy of the Holy See and Vatican City State.
In Pope Francis’ telegram sent to the Dean of the College of Cardinals, Card. Giovanni Battista Re, Cardinal Pell is remembered as “a faithful servant to the Lord” who followed him “without wavering” even “in the hour of trial.”
“He received the prize of eternal peace,” this is the Pope’s wish and blessing. Cardinal Pell passed away yesterday in Rome following heart complications that arose after surgery. “It was an operation, planned for some time, to replace a hip prosthesis,” Vatican News also reports.
