Pope Leo XIV this week placed peace once again at the center of his public appeals, welcoming the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the Middle East and renewing his invitation to a prayer vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica. Alongside the Pope’s call for dialogue, the Vatican also highlighted several significant developments, including Cardinal Pietro Parolin’s appeal to support the Pope’s opposition to war, a new papal message on vocations, the recognition of Henri Caffarel’s heroic virtues, and the release of the logo and motto for the Pope’s upcoming apostolic journey to Spain.
Pope Leo XIV Welcomes Ceasefire in Iran
Pope Leo XIV welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire in the Middle East, describing renewed diplomacy as the only path toward a lasting end to the conflict. Speaking at the conclusion of his weekly General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, the Holy Father stressed that “only through a return to the negotiating table can we bring the war to an end.”
The Pope also renewed his invitation to the faithful to join him for a Prayer Vigil for Peace, which will be held in St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, April 11. His appeal came at a time of heightened international concern, as the ceasefire was seen as a fragile but important sign of hope after days of severe tension.
Vatican: Do Not Leave Pope Leo XIV Alone in Opposing War
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin urged Christians not to leave Pope Leo XIV isolated in his opposition to war, calling on believers to become “voices of peace” in a world increasingly shaped by conflict.
In an interview, Cardinal Parolin described the Pope’s voice as “prophetic,” while warning that it risks becoming “a voice crying in the wilderness” if it is not accompanied by concrete support. He also cautioned against the growing dominance of the “logic of the strongest” on the international stage, stressing the need for moral clarity and active commitment in defending peace.
Pope Leo XIV: Vocation Is a “Path of Beauty”
In his message for the 63rd World Day of Prayer for Vocations, to be celebrated on April 26, Pope Leo XIV reflected on the spiritual and interior dimensions of vocation. He described vocation as “a path of beauty,” one that makes life “truly beautiful” when embraced faithfully.
Drawing on the experience of St. Augustine, the Pope invited the faithful to rediscover God’s presence in the deepest part of the soul through prayer and silence. His message offered a deeply spiritual reflection on discernment, suggesting that vocation is not only a call to mission, but also a path toward inner fulfillment and communion with God.
French Priest Henri Caffarel Declared Venerable
Father Henri Caffarel, the French priest best known for his work in accompanying married couples on the path to holiness, has been declared Venerable, bringing him one step closer to canonization.
Pope Leo XIV recognized the heroic virtues of the priest, who consistently taught that couples are made for happiness and that marriage is a path toward that happiness and sanctity. Born in Lyon in 1903, Caffarel founded the movement for marital spirituality known as Teams of Our Lady in Paris in 1939, leaving a lasting legacy in the life of the Church and in Catholic family spirituality.
Logo and Motto Released for Pope Leo XIV’s Visit to Spain
The Holy See Press Office has released the official logo and motto for Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming apostolic journey to Spain, scheduled for June 6 to 12.
The chosen motto, “Lift up your eyes,” is taken from the fourth chapter of the Gospel of John, where Jesus reveals Himself as the Messiah to the Samaritan woman at the well. During the trip, the Pope is expected to visit Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands, in what will be one of the major international events of his pontificate so far.
