Vatican News: First Month of Pope Leo XIV’s Pontificate

A look back at the historic first month of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate—from his formal possession of Rome’s basilicas to a major theological symposium and the release of his first biography, all amid the ongoing Jubilee Year.

Over the past month, Rome—and the world—have welcomed their new Bishop and Pope. Look back with us on the landmark events that have already begun to shape the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV.

One of the most symbolic milestones: the Holy Father has taken formal possession of the Cathedral of Rome, St. John Lateran, as well as the other Papal Basilicas in the Eternal City.

Meanwhile, Church leaders and theologians gathered in Rome for a major symposium to reflect on the future of the Church under this new pontificate.

Following EWTN’s historic coverage of the death of Pope Francis, the sede vacante, and the election of the first American Pope, EWTN News Vice President and Editorial Director Dr. Matthew Bunson presented the first authoritative biography of Pope Leo XIV—inside the Vatican.

And as the Jubilee Year continues, the Papal Foundation made its pilgrimage to Rome—renewing its mission to support projects close to the heart of the Holy Father.
