Theology Students of Pope Benedict XVI Meet at the Vatican

Pope Benedict XVI's Life and Legacy Explored by his Theology Students at Schuelerkreis 2023

The annual gathering of theology students dedicated to the study of Pope Benedict XVI’s life and work took place recently at the Vatican, where the theme centered on preserving his rich legacy for future generations. This gathering, known as the “Schülerkreis,” has been a tradition since 2008, and it aims to continue the research into the life and contributions of Joseph Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI.

The theme for this year’s gathering was “Collaborators of Truth: Carrying Pope Benedict XVI’s Rich Legacy into the Future.”

The Schülerkreis is an assembly of Benedict XVI’s former students who have been meeting annually since 2008. However, it traces its origins back to 1977. In recent years, the group has expanded to include younger theologians dedicated to the study of Ratzinger’s works, known as the “new Schülerkreis.”

This year’s gathering was particularly poignant as it marked the first meeting following the passing of Pope Benedict XVI in December of the previous year. The focus of this year’s gathering was on the person of Pope Benedict XVI, especially during the tumultuous years of the 1960s and 1970s.

During this time, Joseph Ratzinger navigated the challenges of a rapidly changing world, including the student and sexual revolutions and significant university transformations. Despite these upheavals, Ratzinger remained calm and resolute, relocating from Tübingen to Regensburg and later becoming Archbishop, Cardinal, and eventually Pope.

What made this year’s meeting unique was the sense that although Pope Benedict XVI was physically absent, his presence was profoundly felt. Participants discussed the future of the Schülerkreis and how the legacy of Pope Benedict XVI, particularly through his writings, would continue to influence theology students.

Pope Benedict XVI’s writings, especially his magnum opus “Jesus of Nazareth,” were highlighted as central to his legacy. His focus on bringing people closer to Jesus Christ and the importance of worshiping God through liturgy were key aspects of his theological contributions.

In conclusion, the Schülerkreis gathering celebrated Pope Benedict XVI’s life and contributions while looking forward to a future where his legacy continues to inspire and shape the study of theology.
