Pope Francis Still Expected to Travel to Portugal for World Youth Day

Pope Francis is still expected to travel to Portugal in August for the 37th World Youth Day. The event originally was scheduled for last year. It was changed because of the pandemic. The Holy Father is set for a busy itinerary. The Holy See Press Office has published the program for Pope Francis’ apostolic journey to World Youth Day, which will be held in Lisbon August 1st thru the 6th. In his recent message addressing the WYD participants, the Pope had encouraged young people to look forward to those days, “Have hope… because one grows a lot at an event like WYD.” The Holy Father had emphasized, suggesting young people talk to elders, because they offer wisdom to prepare well for this meeting. For Pope Francis this will be his 42nd apostolic journey and second time in Portugal. This is Pope Francis’ 4th World Youth Day, after attending those organized in Brazil, Poland and Panama. He will deliver nine speeches and two homilies during the trip. As is the custom for World Youth Days, the Pope will arrive the day after its opening. And as with every apostolic journey, the Holy Father’s first meetings will be diplomatic with the country’s political institutions. EWTN Vatican journalist, Matteo Ciofi, has more.
