Pope Francis Calls for Prayer in July for the Eucharist to Become the Center of Catholic Life

In a recent video, Pope Francis has invited Catholics around the world to pray during the month of July, with the intention of making the Eucharist the focal point of their lives. The Holy Father emphasized that a eucharistic life “profoundly transforms human relationships and opens us to encounter with God and our brothers and sisters.”

During the celebration of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi on June 11th, Pope Francis proclaimed that the Eucharist is “the sacrament of love par excellence.” He further emphasized that the Eucharist has the power to transform individuals and their communities. He stated, “If you are the same at the end of Mass as you were at the beginning, something is wrong. The Eucharist is the presence of Jesus, it is deeply transforming. Jesus comes and must transform you.”

In the Eucharist, it is Christ Himself who offers His body and blood for humanity. He invites us to be nourished by Him and to nourish the lives of our fellow brothers and sisters. The Eucharistic celebration is not only an encounter with the Risen Jesus but also a way of opening ourselves to the world as He taught us. Through participating in the Eucharist, Jesus gives us the strength and courage to love as He loved, to go beyond ourselves, and to embrace others with genuine love.

The Pope’s call for prayer is rooted in his belief that the Eucharistic celebration should occupy a central place in the lives of Catholics. He encourages all faithful to allow the transformative power of the Eucharist to shape their relationships and lead them closer to God and one another.

During the 27th Eucharistic Congress held in the Italian city of Matera in September 2022, Pope Francis called for a return to Jesus and the Eucharist. He stated that “heaven begins in the Eucharist.” The Holy Father has consistently emphasized that the Eucharist is not merely a private prayer or a beautiful spiritual experience but rather a sacrament that actualizes and makes present the event of Jesus’ death and resurrection. The bread truly becomes His body offered for us, and the wine truly becomes His blood shed for us.

As Catholics unite in prayer throughout July, Pope Francis hopes that the Eucharistic celebration will become the driving force behind their lives. By embracing the transformative power of the Eucharist, Catholics can foster genuine love, encounter God, and build stronger relationships with their fellow human beings.
