Pope Appeals for Unity with Society of St. Pius X

Pope Leo XIV has cautioned that the Society of St. Pius X’s planned episcopal consecrations without papal approval could lead the traditionalist group further toward schism. Speaking to journalists outside Villa Barberini in Castel Gandolfo, the Holy Father reiterated his desire for reconciliation and ecclesial unity.

“We have invited them, and I am still considering making another appeal,” the Pope said, urging the group to remain in communion with the Church. The Society has announced plans to consecrate four priests as bishops on July 1 without a papal mandate. The Vatican has warned that such an act would be considered schismatic and could incur automatic excommunication.

Prayers for Parents Mourning a Child

Ahead of the Day for Life, which will be observed on June 21 in England, Wales, Scotland, and Ireland, Pope Leo offered prayers for parents grieving the loss of a child, particularly infants.

In a special message, the Pope expressed his hope that bereaved parents may find comfort in God’s enduring love for both themselves and their children. He emphasized that human life finds its ultimate fulfillment in eternity and that God’s love gives lasting meaning to every person, even beyond death.

Addressing participants at the 10th Austrian World Summit through a video message, Pope Leo underscored the moral responsibility of caring for creation.

The Holy Father noted that the Church has long recognized the ethical dimensions of environmental concerns. Reflecting on climate change through the lens of the theological virtues, he argued that religious faith offers an essential perspective for addressing ecological challenges and promoting responsible stewardship of the earth.

Pope Encourages Responsible Journalism

Marking the 80th anniversary of the Italian newspaper L’Adige, Pope Leo defended the vital role of rigorous journalism in contemporary society.

In his message, he encouraged journalists to cultivate seriousness and integrity in their reporting, preserve the richness of cultures and local communities, and resist what he described as the “drug” of fake news and artificial polarization. The Pope stressed that truthful reporting helps strengthen communities and serves the common good.

Strengthening Catholic-Jewish Relations

During an audience with representatives of the United Jewish Appeal Federation of New York, Pope Leo renewed the Church’s commitment to combating antisemitism.

Reflecting on the progress made since the Second Vatican Council’s 1965 declaration Nostra Aetate, the Pope highlighted the importance of continued cooperation between Catholics and Jews. He called on both communities to work together against all forms of discrimination and to promote mutual understanding and respect.
