The pontiff visited the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino on July 20 from Castel Gandolfo, where he is on vacation.

Pope Leo XIV made a private visit on July 20 to the Abbey of Montecassino, where St. Benedict of Nursia is buried.

As announced by the Holy See Press Office, the pontiff made the trip while on vacation at Castel Gandolfo, where he will remain through July 27. At Montecassino, he prayed at the tomb of St. Benedict, considered the father of Western monasticism, โ€œentrusting him with his plea for peace in those regions of the world marked by bloodshed and conflict.โ€

The pope also enjoyed lunch with the Benedictine community at the abbey.

Leoโ€™s surprise visit to Montecassino was his first since his election to the papacy in 2025. While on vacation that year, he also made a surprise visit to the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie della Mentorella in Guadagnolo, where he also prayed for peace.

The Abbey of Montecassino, founded by St. Benedict in 529, will celebrate the 1,500th anniversary of its founding in 2029.

Leoโ€™s visit to Montecassino was also his third public appearance (outside his Sunday Angelus) during his Castel Gandolfo vacation, following his lunch with the poor on July 11 and a summer concert on July 18. Except for his Sunday Angelus, all private and public audiences, including the Wednesday general audience, are suspended during his vacation.
