Reflecting on Pope Benedict XVI's Legacy: A Two-Day Conference Marks First Anniversary of His Passing

In a solemn tribute to Pope Benedict XVI, EWTN, in partnership with the Fundatio Christiana Virtus and the Vatican Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI Foundation, broadcasted a special conference on December 30th and 31st, commemorating the first anniversary of the late Pope’s passing. Held in the Campo Santo Teutonico adjacent to St. Peter’s Basilica, the conference gathered scholars, experts, and friends of Joseph Ratzinger to discuss his profound impact on the Church and society.

December 30th Sessions:

The conference opened with the session “Benedict XVI, Memory and Legacy,” moderated by Prof. Vincent Twomey and P. Federico Lombardi, S.J., at 9:00 AM. This discussion focused on Benedict XVI’s lasting contributions to ecclesiastical life.

At 11:00 AM, the topic shifted to “The Center of His Theology: Jesus Christ,” led by Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller and Prof. Matthew Bunson. They delved into the Christological essence of Benedict XVI’s theological work.

The day concluded with “His Death in the Light of Eternal Life” at 3:00 PM, featuring Cardinal Kurt Koch and Prof. Ralph Weimann, offering perspectives on Benedict XVI’s views on mortality and the afterlife.

December 31st Sessions:

The final day began with a Holy Mass at 8:00 AM in St. Peter’s Basilica, providing a moment of contemplation and worship for attendees, and presided over by Archbishop Georg Gänswein.

At 10:00 AM, Archbishop Georg Gänswein presented “His Last Years,” imparting insights into the final phase of Benedict XVI’s life and his enduring legacy.

This conference served not only as a memorial but also as an intellectual and spiritual exploration of Pope Benedict XVI’s life and teachings, reaffirming his significant role in shaping modern Catholic thought and practice. The discussions and reflections provided during this event offered a deeper understanding of his theological perspectives and his influence on both the Church and the wider society.
