Synod 2023: A Glimpse into the Final Week’s Deliberations

Pathways and Discourse in the Final Week

As the Synod 2023 draws to its conclusion, the final week, which began on October 24, witnessed the participants delving deep into discussions surrounding the “Letter to the People of God.” This document, traditionally issued by the Synod of Bishops at the end of its sessions, addresses the global faithful.

Distinguished from the Synod’s synthesis document, this letter is set to highlight crucial themes such as peace and migration. In his opening remarks, Cardinal Hollerich, the Synod’s Relator General, described this document as a “road map” guiding toward the Synod’s second and more decisive stage.

On October 25, the General Congregation convened, during which Cardinal Hollerich unveiled the draft of the synthesis report. Later that afternoon, a communal rosary prayer was held in the tranquil setting of the Vatican Gardens.

Subsequent discussions on the synthesis report occurred in more intimate settings, allowing for more profound reflections. During these discussions, methods, and strategies for the upcoming phase of the Synodal process were also mapped out.

The Synod’s final working day, October 28, was marked by readings of the synthesis report in both morning and afternoon assembly sessions, culminating in its final endorsement. The Synodal Assembly for this year formally concluded with a solemn Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Square on October 29, presided over by Pope Francis.

The pivotal stage of the Synod on Synodality is slated to commence in October 2024.
