Where Vocations are Born

Hearing God’s call in an indifferent world

On Sunday, April 21, the Church celebrates the 61st World Day of Vocations. In his message in preparation for this celebration, Pope Francis not only thanked the priests and religious for their service, but the Holy Father also highlighted the important role of the family in fostering vocations.

“I think,” the Pope said, “of mothers and fathers who do not think first of themselves or follow fleeting fads of the moment, but shape their lives through relationships marked by love and graciousness, openness to the gift of life and commitment to their children and their growth in maturity.”

Pope Francis urged the faithful for constant prayer for vocations, also addressing young people who feel distant about the Church and encouraged them to be challenged by Jesus Christ.

The Holy Father emphasized that the World Vocations’ Day even has a “synodal character.” The Church is so rich in different charisms, talents, and vocations, says Francis, which is why it is so important to listen to one another.

The goal of every vocation is to become men and women of hope, the Holy Father continued in his message. Everyone is called to “rise up” and awaken from indifference by embracing our vocation and letting Christ guide our steps.

In EWTN Vatican’s series of Roman Nights, bringing people together from different walks of life for evening discussions in Rome, Sister Emanuela Edwards shared about vocations. She, too, has experienced this calling in lives of others to rise up and awaken from indifference throughout her 15 years of life in Italy.

Sister Emanuela, of the Missionaries of Divine Revelation, taking inspiration from a Saint explained, “Catherine of Siena has that wonderful phrase, you know, you’d set the world on fire if you do what God calls you to do. And that comes about when we do the project that the Lord has for us.”
