Leading Vatican expert on child protection in the Catholic Church resigns citing lack of accountability and clarity

Leading child protection expert in the Catholic Church, Father Hans Zollner, has resigned from the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors after citing a lack of accountability, clarity, and organizational issues

Father Hans Zollner, a leading expert on child protection in the Catholic Church, has resigned from the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors after serving for nine years. In a press conference held in Rome, Fr. Zollner cited a lack of accountability, clarity, and organizational issues as the reason for his resignation. He expressed concern that the commission’s ability to work effectively had been compromised due to these issues, which have caused confusion within the commission.

Fr. Zollner highlighted the need for financial transparency, more clearly defined roles, and better internal communication within the commission. He emphasized that the commission should be a place for victims to meet, gather, and be heard. He stressed the importance of listening to abuse victims and understanding their experiences.

Fr. Zollner met with Pope Francis in January and expressed his concerns directly to him, telling him that he would be resigning. He said that his decision to step down was not an easy one to make, but he felt that it was the only way to improve the commission.

Cardinal O’Malley, the head of the commission, released a short statement in response to Fr. Zollner’s claims. He expressed surprise and disappointment at Fr. Zollner’s assertions and strongly disagreed with them. However, he pointed out that the commission has a plenary meeting scheduled in the next few weeks in which they will address these concerns.

Fr. Zollner’s work with the commission has gained him international recognition as a strong advocate for abuse victims in the Church. His resignation has left many in the Church shocked and questioning the future of the commission. It remains to be seen how the commission will address the issues raised by Fr. Zollner and move forward with its mission to safeguard children and protect those most vulnerable.
