A Cross of Unity Ahead of the Winter Games

A powerful symbol of unity through sport has arrived in Milan. Just days before the Winter Games begin on February 6, the Vatican Sports Cross was welcomed at the Basilica of San Babila. Originally created for Olympic host cities, the cross was received by Archbishop Mario Delpini, who read a message from Pope Leo XIV.

In his message, the Pope expressed his hope that the Games will foster friendship and fraternity among nations. The event also coincided with the eve of the renewed Olympic Truce, encouraging peace and mutual respect throughout the competitions.

A Historic Appointment in Vatican Governance

In a landmark decision, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Sister Raffaela Petrini to the Commission for Reserved Matters, the Vatican body that oversees confidential financial contracts. She is the first woman ever to serve on this strategic commission.

Sister Petrini, who already serves as President of the Vatican City Governorate, continues to break new ground in Church governance. Her appointment reflects ongoing reforms that expand leadership roles beyond the College of Cardinals.

Tensions Deepen With the Society of St. Pius X

Relations between the Vatican and the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) took a serious turn this week. The traditionalist group announced plans to consecrate new bishops on July 1 without a papal mandate—an act that would incur automatic excommunication under canon law.

The SSPX claims that Rome did not adequately respond to its request for additional bishops. Observers warn that this move could deepen divisions and complicate future reconciliation efforts.

A further update came Thursday morning that the SSPX Superior General will meet with His Eminence Cardinal Fernández next Thursday, February 12.

Saint John Henry Newman Added to the Roman Calendar

The Vatican has officially inscribed Saint John Henry Newman—recently declared a Doctor of the Church—into the General Roman Calendar. His optional memorial will be celebrated each year on October 9, the anniversary of his conversion to Catholicism.

Pope Leo XIV highlighted Newman’s lifelong pursuit of truth, his intellectual contributions, and his spiritual witness as reasons for granting him universal liturgical recognition.

February Prayer Intention: Children Who Suffer

Pope Leo XIV’s prayer intention for the month of February is dedicated to children suffering from incurable illnesses. In his message to the faithful, the Pope pointed to their smiles—even amid pain—as a testimony to the Kingdom of God.

He called on Catholics to pray that these children and their families receive continued medical, emotional, and spiritual support.
